Book-It Founding Co-Artistic Directors Receive Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Anniversary Grant
SEATTLE, WA. July 15, 2010 – Book-It Repertory Theatre’s Founding Co-Artistic Directors Jane Jones and Myra Platt were honored to learn that they were among five recipients of Anniversary grants awarded by Philanthropist Paul G. Allen in commemoration of his foundation’s 20 years of philanthropy.
For 20 years, The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has supported nonprofit organizations in the Northwest who focus on making positive and measurable change. The Foundation’s vision for transforming lives and building healthy communities guides its five priority program funding areas, which include nurturing the arts, engaging children in learning, addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, advancing scientific and technological discoveries, and providing economic relief amid tough economic times.
In recognition of its 20th anniversary milestone, the Foundation has awarded five special Anniversary grants totaling $100,000 to honor founders of nonprofits it has supported in the Pacific Northwest. The grants recognize change agents who created organizations that continue to deliver high impact programs for local communities. "Through our Anniversary grants, we are recognizing leaders who exemplify passion, dedication and the entrepreneurial spirit that has made their organizations succeed," said Jo Lynn Allen, president of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
Each of the founders’ nonprofits has been awarded $20,000 to support the organization’s programs; Book-It has not yet designated the programs that will be enhanced by this grant.
This honor comes to Book-It as it completes its own 20th Anniversary celebration. "It brought us to tears, it was incredibly moving," Book-It's Platt said [in the Seattle Times] of receiving the grant. "It's such an honor to be recognized by the Allen Foundation, because they've been by our side for so many years now supporting us."
The other recipients of the Foundation’s Anniversary grants are: Rachel Bristol, Founder and CEO of Oregon Food Bank (Portland, OR.); Bridget Cooke, Founder and Executive Director of Adelante Mujeres (Forest Grove, OR.); Jeanne Harmon, Executive Director and Founder of Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (Tacoma); and Ken Stuart, President and Founder of Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (Seattle).
Book-It Receives a 2010 Mayor’s Arts Award
S EATTLE, WA June 8, 2010 — Book-It Repertory Theatre was happy to learn that Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs has named the company among the six honorees for the 2010 awards. The publicly nominated awards recognize the contributions made by artists, arts and cultural organizations and community members who make a difference through arts and cultural activities.
Book-It, now celebrating over 20 years of transforming great literature into great theatre and to inspiring its audiences to read, is proud that its main stage, touring, and outreach efforts have made positive contributions to the quality of life in Seattle.
Managing Director Charlotte Tiencken said, “The Company is extremely proud of this honor—particularly since Seattle is home to so many wonderful arts organizations and the quality bar is so high.” Co-Artistic Director Myra Platt added, “Jane [Jones] and I are thrilled and grateful to be recognized for our long-time commitment to our home town.”
On the eve of opening the final show of its 20th anniversary season, The Cider House Rules, Part One: Here in St. Clouds, the announcement of the award is timely. The premiere of this adaptation in the ’90s was a true turning point in the development of the company, and bringing it to the company’s home at the Center House Theatre represents a coming of age; the Mayor’s Arts Award affirms it.
Book-It Repertory Theatre congratulates its fellow 2010 recipients: Visual Artist Juan Alonso; Dennis Coleman, Artistic Director of Seattle Men's Chorus & Seattle Women's Chorus; Reel Grrls; Sergei Tschernisch, President, Cornish College of the Arts; and Velocity Dance Center.
